NIFA Accountant reveals 'Bank behaving badly'

Date: 21st May 2009

When BBC News wanted a forensic accountant to investigate the £250 million loss of a High Street Bank branch they turned to NIFA member David Winch.

David was contacted by the BBC when they needed expert help for a 'File on 4' programme broadcast on 26 May (to be repeated on Sunday 31 May). They needed a forensic accountant to help them find just how much a single branch of the Bank of Scotland could have lost in bad loans to 13 businesses.

After examining the records David was interviewed for Radio 4 by reporter Allan Urry.

"I was shocked by what I found" said David, "I have never seen anything quite as bad as this. Even for a large organisation, £250 million is an awful lot of money to lose."

NIFA Accountant gives their opinion on the collapse of Christmas savings company Farepak

Date: 4th December 2006

David Winch speaks to the BBC on the collapse of Farepak. The following text is taken from the article which can be found on the BBC website:

Farepak's financial woes began when it borrowed £34m from the Bank of Scotland (now Halifax Bank of Scotland) in 2000 to buy a business it eventually sold three years later for less than a tenth of what it had paid.

Forensic accountant David Winch told the BBC it was "a serious wound to a company of this size" and a major loss for its parent company.

Mr Winch said this was compounded by the parent company buying three new businesses which need time to mature and reach a profit.
